Zoe Ranganathan was inspired to work within the student union movement during her first months on campus. She quickly realised that although uni is a fun and easy-going experience for some students, others were struggling to get access to learning basics.
From there, she took on the role of President of the National Union of Students. Leading through the many challenges of COVID-19 - including remote learning, the loss of many international students, and funding cuts to universities - would have been difficult for any new leader. But Zoe’s resilience and perseverance saw her achieve incredible success, helping students around the country to stay in their courses and work towards their education.
Zoe is a passionate and articulate young leader, with advice around how to operate in political spaces, how to advocate for issues you care about, and how to give and receive feedback. She speaks about managing adversity during a difficult year and finding productive ways of dealing with problems.

Tarang Chawla is an anti-violence campaigner and champion of gender equality and mental health.
In 2015, his sister Nikita - a talented dance choreographer - was brutally murdered by her husband. The experience prompted Tarang to become an activist against men’s violence, and his work has been instrumental in changing the conversation in Australia.
Tarang has written about domestic violence, discirmination, gender equality and human rights for numerous publications. He appears in the Australian media to advocate for a safer future, and to reiterate the importance of reporting on survivor’s stories in a responsible way.
Tarang believes in the power of empathetic and authentic leadership to make real change. In his activism and advocacy work, he brings other people to the front to share their own stories and let their voices be heard. For Tarang, leadership is about standing up for what’s right and having conviction about your own beliefs, even in the face of adversity.
