Tuesday Sep 07, 2021
When Penny Cula-Reid was a teenager, she was told she could no longer play AFL because she was a girl. What happened next, changed footy in Australia.
Penny, along with some other girls from the local footy club, began a sex discrimination case against AFL Victoria, resulting the rules being changed to create a youth girls competition. Years later, the first women’s national footy competition, the AFLW, was born.
As a player, Penny represented Collingwood in 2017. She went on to coach the Collingwood VFLW side to the minor premiership and win Coach of the Year. Now, Penny coaches full time at Williamstown Football Club.
Penny’s leadership style is defined by her passion for getting the best out of the people around her. She is driven to create change, to help others learn, and to empower her players and peers to achieve new heights. In this episode, she shares her story, her approach to coaching, and the challenges she has faced in her journey to where she is today.
